Our method

How our standings work

Every product in the guide carries a standing — Top rated, Popular pick, Rising or New listing. Here is exactly what those mean, and what they do not.

What each standing means

We deliberately do not publish a score out of ten. The underlying data tells us how products rank against each other, not how good they are on an absolute scale — and a decimal number would imply a precision we do not have.

Where our products come from

We list products from two retail platforms. Both publish performance data for the products they sell, and that data is what our rating is built on. We do not stock, ship, or sell anything ourselves.

What goes into a standing

Standings are built from publicly available marketplace performance data:

Why some products show “New listing”

A platform only publishes performance figures once a product has enough sales history behind it. Newer listings have not reached that point yet.

Rather than guess at a standing for them, we show New listing. Those products still appear in the guide, and you can still compare what is known about them — but they carry no standing, because we have nothing solid to base one on. When the data arrives, they are ranked like everything else.

Standings are relative within a category

A sleep formula is scored against other sleep formulas, not against weight-loss products, and against products from the same platform — each platform measures performance its own way, so mixing the two scales would produce a number that means nothing. Categories differ enormously in size and competition, so a single global scale would tell you almost nothing. Scoring within the category answers the question you are actually asking: of the options for my concern, which are performing best?

This means the top product in a small category and the top product in a large one can both score highly. That is intentional.

What the rating is not

It is not a clinical or scientific evaluation. We do not run trials, commission lab testing, or assess ingredient safety or efficacy.

It is not a health recommendation. A high rating means a product is selling well and being widely recommended within its category — nothing more.

It is not influenced by payment. No seller can buy a better standing or placement.

How often it updates

Marketplace data shifts constantly. We refresh our figures periodically and recalculate every standing at the same time, so the guide reflects what is performing now rather than what performed a year ago.

What does not affect a standing

Placement and standing cannot be bought. Nothing a brand pays us changes where it appears or how it scores. See About for more.
